The State Lath of Education on Tuesday released its newdraft scientific discipline framework, the first update to guidelines for teaching science in California in 11 years. The board volition collect public comments on it for 60 days, through January. 19.

The California Section of Instruction has developed an online course for those wishing to provide comments.

The new Grand-12 science framework is aligned to the Adjacent Generation Scientific discipline Standards, adopted by the land boardin 2013.  The California Department of Teaching defines frameworks as "blueprints for implementing content standards."

The new standards were developed to help U.Southward. students compete with their peers globally in the 21st century and better prepare them for careers in science, engineering science, engineering and math, or STEM.

Similar to the Common Core standards, the new science standards place a greater emphasis on critical thinking, trouble­-solving and integrating concepts that accept previously been taught separately. They also downplay memorization, while stressing scientific thinking and connections to careers and scientific discipline-related issues in the earth.

The framework includes "guiding principles" for implementing the standards and detailed capacity devoted to coursework at simple, middle and high schoolhouse form levels.  It discusses different class options for grades vi-8 and grades 9-12. In addition, the framework includes capacity on instructional strategies, leadership and supports, and instructional resources .

To help teachers thoroughly examine the draft curriculum framework, the California Science Teachers Clan is holding x group review sessions throughout the state, said Jessica Sawko, executive managing director of the association. In addition, her organization plans to postal service a webinar online to guide science teachers as they read the draft and to encourage them to provide feedback.

The association will also release a list of minimum laboratory equipment that science teachers volition demand based on the new standards, she added. Sawko urged educators to brainstorm experimenting with the new science standards right away, even though pedagogy materials aligned to the standrds are non all the same bachelor.

"Now is the time to have the dives and early on steps forward and non wait for materials," she said. "That's the message nosotros have been sending to our teachers in the field."

Stephen Blake, an advisor for the nonprofit advocacy group Children Now, praised the work that has been washed on the draft curriculum framework, which spans ane,900 pages. The Instructional Quality Commission that reviewed the draft forth with subject expanse experts, he said, has been very responsive to concerns raised by his arrangement, which wants to "provide some guidance to educators and then they tin be as effective every bit possible as they reach out to the business organization community to bring hands­-on experiences to children."

The board is required to adopt the new curriculum framework past Jan. 31, 2017, according to a nib signed Aug. 7. Previously, the  framework was expected past January. 31, 2016.

The timeline was delayed to requite reviewers more time to comb through the curriculum framework, and requite feedback to the writers, said Tom Adams, executive managing director of the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resource Division in the California Department of Education. The state board agreed at its meeting in Sacramento on Nov. four  to extend the timeline, saying it makes sense to accept a thoughtful, thorough approach to the new science curriculum framework.
